Things are happening around here! Three companies have hired Jenn Mears Web Design LLC to create new websites. They are:
Milestones Unlimited, P. C.: This is a company that was looking to create a brand new site for their care management and consulting business based in Hopkinton, MA. They are licensed social workers who are dedicated to helping seniors and their families find the best care available in times of transition.
Design Objective: To create a site that will present the services offered by Milestones Unlimited in a way that is easily read and understood by the end user. After surveying a number of similar web sites, it was determined that a simple, easy to follow navigation would be most important, followed by easy to read content that could quickly be scanned by the reader.
Loynd Capital Management: There are several internet services that help users choose a Chartered Financial Analyst and these services often direct the user to the CFA’s website via a link. Wishing to capitalize on this service, Geoffrey Loynd, MBA contacted Jenn Mears Web Design about setting up an informational site for both prospective and current clients.
Design Objective: In order to present the company to prospective clients, a home page with a strong sense of the site’s purpose was needed. Loynd Capital Management’s logo is a nautical steering wheel and it flows smoothly into a theme of aiding navigation through today’s financial waters. The aim of the content is to guide the client through the services offered and help them to make informed decisions.
I’ll try to keep posting articles on things like advertising and search engine optimization, but from here on out it’s going to be ABC (always be coding) for a while!

At a Salem Chamber of Commerce coffee connection last summer, I had the opportunity to meet Jennifer Bell, the manager of the Salem Main Streets Initiative, a non-profit focused on revitalizing the downtown area. She had mentioned that they were looking to develop a web site on their URL, salemmainstreets.org, and now, that plan has come to fruition!
It was a lot of fun to work on something that would reach into so many aspects of our community and there is so much going on in Salem that at times the committee wasn’t sure what the main focus of the site should be. Was it for visitors looking to find out about all there is to do here? Was it for new and current business owners to tap into all the resources available to them? Was it for residents to follow local business news and find out what’s happening in their town? Luckily, the idea of a Wordpress-driven site was approved and its flexibility and ease-of-use was a good fit for the task at hand. Welcome to the new Salem Main Streets site, where you can find information about local festivals, shopping, dining and new businesses. There is a section for local business owners and an interactive map, powered by Community Walk, to be your guide to everything this great community has to offer!

I’m happy to announce the existence of a brand new site for Parents United of Salem. Originally an HTML-driven site with a Collective-X management system in the wings, the new site is built on a Wordpress theme entitled YourBlog-20 created by Abhishek Tripathi. The site also required plugins such as NextGEN photo gallery and Simple Forum. I also installed CForms II but haven’t really utilized it yet. This was great experience in terms of expanding my WP knowledge. Since the site’s visual designer wanted to have different looks for different pages, I had to use templates for the various sections.
I had a couple of white-knuckle moments at the keyboard during some key points in development. The first was when I tried to install WP on a subfolder so I could let others track the new site’s progress. At first the install didn’t work, but after a little digging, it turned out that GoDaddy.com is responsible for that little comment on the wp-configure file that says “define(’DB_HOST’,'localhost’);//99.9% chance you won’t need to change this”. But on a Godaddy site, you DO have to change that to a particular address. When IE users told me that the Resources page wasn’t displaying properly, I had to dip into the IE7.css a little and tweak some stuff. Then, when I thought everything was all set to change to the root folder, the Resources page reverted back to its pre-css-tweak mess! After a little thrashing around, I found the culprit, a style declaration on the actual page’s template that was overriding the page’s conditional IE7 formatting. A little snip and Eureka! The page displayed correctly again.
All in all, a fun project and it felt good to be working on something that I could really relate too. It’s a great group of people and a really great resource for Salem families who want to connect to their community.
